CHAPTER 18

It was Friday evening, about two weeks before Christmas, when I came back to our girls' flat-share after a late lecture from university and already at the front door some voices spilled out of the inside, but I couldn't place them. With my heart beating nervously, I opened the door with my key and entered the apartment.

Music drifted from the living room to me in the hallway, and there were a few jackets hanging on our small coat rack that I couldn't place on either Val or Clare.

Astonished, I put down my things, when Valerie rushed towards me, laughing wildly, and fell around my neck, beaming with joy. "Eve," she greeted me as she hugged me to her and blew a kiss on my hair, still slightly damp from the snow. "You're finally here too!"

Surprised, I looked at her after I broke away, but smiled at her euphoric state. "Have you been drinking already?", I asked, laughing. "Jesus, Val, it's not even nine o'clock at night yet."

My best friend waved it off and grinned. "Who cares, it's finally the weekend!" She threw her hands in the air, screeching, and started laughing as well. "We've been waiting here for you for over two hours. Why are you so late?"

"I had another seminar I wanted to attend," I replied, peeking out at the living room, from which I perceived many different voices. "What are you celebrating and ... Who did you invite?" I found it odd that I didn't know anything about Val apparently having a house party here. And it was even stranger that even Clare hadn't given me a heads up before I'd gone home. After all, she knew I was going to be late tonight. So why hadn't she told me? Or at least told Val where I was right now.

Valerie put her arm around my waist and pulled me close. "Come on, I'll show you," she said enthusiastically, pulling me with her into the living room, which was nearly bursting at the seams with people I didn't know, who were now all turning their heads to Val and me at the same time, looking at us wide-eyed.

With an unpleasant feeling in my stomach I searched the crowd for Clare and discovered her quite apart at the window, looking at me with an apologetic expression. But I didn't understand why until the next moment, when I let my gaze wander and discovered first Dallas on our sofa, then ... Kennedy Connall.

Kennedy Connall, sitting casually on one of the armchairs in our living room, staring boredly at the cigarette in his hand. The fact that smoking was forbidden here didn't seem to matter to him any more than the fact that it was Val's, Clare's and my flat that he was smoking all over.

I swallowed, trying to keep all the rising emotions inside me under control and not jump down Valerie's throat. Or best of all, Kennedy, who didn't even dignify me with a glance, even though he was, damn it, in my apartment.
